Poland and Ukraine here I come!

I think I have been wanting to go to Ukraine since summer last year or even before that. Well, it is about time to make this come true. I found a very cheap return flight from Germany to Krakow, Poland. And I am planning to take the train to Lviv and Kiev in Ukraine.

I have always wanted to see the Soviet style buildings in pre-Soviet countries. Especially after I have been in the Baltic States. EU citizens and also nationals from a few other countries such as Japan, Canada, and the United States can enter Ukraine without a visa. The only requirement is that your passport is valid for at least 6 months, when you exit Ukraine.

(閱讀全文)

Brussels (October 2008)

My sister and I took the train from Amsterdam to Brussels on a day trip back in October last year. The train ride was not too bad. It took us 2 hours and 45 minutes to get to Brussels Central Station. There is no need to take the Thalys, because the duration is more or less the same with the regular international train. There are just less stops, when you take the Thalys, but traveling with the high speed train is more expensive and it requires seat reservations. And the Thalys does not stop at Brussels Central Station, although you can always take the subway to get to the Central Station.

Though Belgium is our neighbor, this was my first time visiting Brussels. We could not have picked a worse date for visiting Brussels. The weather was not very good. It was drizzling in Amsterdam. Well, I thought it was not going to be any rain in Brussels though. Haha. Our first stop was the Grand-Place (or Grote Markt in Dutch/Flemish or Market Square in English). Luckily, every street name in Brussels is in French and Dutch/Flemish. At Grand-Place you can find the Tourist Information Center on the ground floor of the Town Hall.

Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville).

(閱讀全文)

Poland

I am thinking about visiting Poland in September this year. I would like to visit the capital Warsaw and the old capital Krakow. I am planning to make a day trip to the Auschwitz concentration camp which is near Krakow. I think the visit is going to be very shocking, although I have visited another concentration camp (Dachau near Munich). One should visit Auschwitz in order to understand the extent of harm done to the Jews during WWII. Also, the little town Zakopane, which is near the mountains, is also close to Krakow. So I am planning to visit Zakopane as a day trip.

I found a Chinese travel show on Poland on the internet. It is part of a series called From City to City.
Warsaw

(閱讀全文)

Vancouver (March 2008) - Part 3

During my visit to Vancouver, I mostly only walked around. I think that is the best way to see things more 'clearly'. I only took the public transport, when I traveled to the University of British Columbia campus and Richmond.

When I was on the train heading to Vancouver, I met a very nice Korean/Japanese girl. Well, it was a 3 day trip and it must be very boring not to talk to other train passengers. On the train you really could see all types of people, such as people I would not have talked to. There was a guy who got drunk and harrassed other passengers. There was a girl who was apparently on drugs and hit on a much older guy. There was another girl whose grandfather was Japanese and grandmother native Indian.

The Korean/Japanese girl I met was from Vancouver and she told me what I had to see in Vancouver. She told me I could see a lot of nice cars in Gastown, so I went there. I could only find The Gastown Steam Clock. And I seemed to be the only one who showed interest in that clock....

The Gastown Steam Clock.
(閱讀全文)

Vancouver (March 2008) - Part 2

I have not really had the chance to write about the sights I visited in Vancouver, most probably due to laziness. I arrived in Vancouver after a 3 day train journey all the way from Toronto. So I had not showered for 3 days. Fortunately, it was in winter..... Haha.

Vancouver's main train station Pacific Central.

After I had arrived at the hostel I stayed at and taken a long shower, I went to explore the Kitsilano area that was close to the hostel. I did not know what to expect, because I had not really done my homework before I arrived in Vancouver. So in the end I had only visited the Kitsilano Beach. I really liked it there! I had the feeling that Vancouver was a relaxing place, though my first impression of Vancouverites was not good.

A crow on a tree branch.
(閱讀全文)

Vancouver (March 2008) - Part 1

I just picked some of the pictures I took in Vancouver and would like to show you how Vancouver is like. At least what I think it is like.

My first impression of Vancouver was not that good, because when I arrived after a 3 days train trip, people were not helpful. I needed to take the Skytrain (which was extremely short for a metro and very full) and then the bus to get to the hostel. Well, I could not find the bus stop and tried to ask some people there. They kind of just ignored me. Well, I did look like a tourist with my map and luggage. There was a guy in a suit who saw that I wanted to ask him where I could the bus stop and walked all the way around me.... Ehum.... Maybe he could not speak English or something. But still he could just have said that he did not speak English.

(閱讀全文)

I am planning to have a one-month trip some time next year. I was thinking about traveling overland to Morocco, but it does not seem to be extremely safe there. I also thought about going to Iran via Turkey, but both countries are having problems right now (I do not want to die so soon!). I am thinking about going to Ukraine. I want to visit a few other Eastern European countries as well, such as Poland, Slovenia, Romania, and Croatia. I cannot wait till I can start planning for this trip!
